Kevin Murray addressed the club on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which was faultlessly deployed from the Guinea Space Centre on the 25th of December, 2021, on a 1.5 million kilometre journey towards the sun to orbit at “Lagrance: point2”. The telescope which weighs 6200 kilos cost over 10 billion U.S. dollars. It was financed by NASA, the partners of the European Space Agency and Canada . It is twice the size the Hubble telescope launched in 1990 and has an estimated mission duration of five to 10 years
Kevin gave a detailed presentation, including the 16 hexagonal mirror segments to form a heat shield and infrared sensing, supported by NASA sources, building to the climax of the first and subsequent images of different galaxies going back almost to the dawn of the universe in stunning clarity. We were thrilled to learn that this is just a start to unlocking greater secrets of the universe.
Thanks Kevin for conducting us on this journey,
